Dental Editors Rise to Address Artificial Intelligence in Dental Journalism
-
The American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists (AADEJ) has assembled a panel of experts to conduct a pivotal study aimed at standardizing author guidelines and publication policies on the use of regenerative artificial intelligence (GAI) in dental publications. GAI refers to computer systems capable of creating new content from given input and prompts.
This comprehensive study will involve surveying editors and publishers of dental publications to identify current practices and needs. The findings will inform a detailed White Paper that will provide tailored author guidelines and policy templates for dental publications, modeled on leading healthcare and scientific publications.
The expert panel comprises a diverse group of dental editors and professional managing editors from the dental community, ranging from local newsletters to state and specialty organization publications. The panel includes dental librarian-informationists, intellectual property and AI law experts, dental profession ethicists, an association executive director, and dental academics.
Dental publications are essential in advancing clinical practice by presenting new concepts and translating the best evidence for clinicians. While GAI is a valuable tool for authors, researchers, and editors, it is prone to errors and biases. Profession-specific guidelines will support the ethical, human-supervised use of GAI, reducing the dissemination of false or misleading information, enhancing patient safety, and creating consistent understanding for authors and clear expectations for readers.
The American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists (AADEJ), founded in 1931, aims to enhance communication within the dental community and elevate the standards of ethical dental journalism. The organization promotes responsible, ethical editorial practices and includes diverse member publications such as state and local dental associations, academic and specialty groups, dental school alumni, allied dental, student, and commercial publications.
